First appearing as a concept vehicle in 2019, the Alfa Romeo Toenail Tonale is set to be a subcompact crossover occupying the white space underneath the existing Stelvio — both in size and price. It'll make a good entry point to the brand for those who don't wish to shell out for an expensive version of the Giulia or aforementioned Stelvio.
Spy photogs have captured this Tonale test mule prowling the streets of Turin, wearing eye-crossing camouflage to hide its distinctive Alfa
corporate grille. Those wheels are a dead giveaway as to the brand, however, since similar styles pop up on other models in Alfa showrooms. Expect similar brand-specific flourishes in production models, including a colour palette of bold paint choices.

Talking heads are suggesting the Tonale will be offered in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) guise, propelled by a 1.3L gasoline-powered engine and an electric motor. The latter will likely reside on the rear wheels, providing all-wheel drive (eAWD, to be precise) in a setup similar to that of the Jeep Renegade in certain markets. Tonale and Renegade share much in terms of platform, thanks to the close ties between Jeep and Alfa Romeo.
Recommended from Editorial5 things I learned driving the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia QuadrifoglioWant a 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio? Check out its competitors firstWhy is the brand deciding to build such a machine? Because its competitors are making bank with ones of their own, of course. Audi has the Q3, Lexus the UX line, and BMW plays with the X1 and X2 duo. This is a murderously competitive segment, so Alfa needs to get this thing right in order to find success. Initially slated as a 2021 model, the machine has been pushed back for this very reason - not to mention various complications brought about by global events.
For some shoppers, the Alfa badge will be enough to get them in the door. After all, if every single driveway in a neighbourhood is occupied with vehicles from mainstream brands, why not put a thumb in the eye of convention and park a bright red Alfa in yours? At least no one will accuse you of being boring.
