Minky Worden, the director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch which is part of the SRA coalition of global non-governmental organizations, said sports bodies had to be more transparent at this time.

The WPA, an association that represents around 85,000 athletes globally through more than 100 player associations, said that in nearly all previous cases, players consumed these substances "recreationally" or suffered from "underlying challenges with addiction".

The research, produced by Italian immunologists and lung specialists based at institutes in Berlin, Rome and Verona, suggests that due to strenuous exercise, elite athletes are more likely to inhale virus particles and direct them to the lower areas of the lung.

The four-page report, entitled Guiding Considerations For A Safe Return To Work And Play, has been drawn up by the World Players' Association ahead of a conference call on Wednesday involving the players' representatives in all major sports, including footballers' union FIFPro, cricketers' equivalent FICA and the bodies representing stars of the NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball.
