The pineal gland is a small, endocrine gland located in the vertebrate brain that plays a significant role in the regulation of various physiological processes, including the sleep-wake cycle, with implications for behavior and body motions.

Additionally, the pineal gland is thought to play a role in spiritual and mystical experiences.


Dysfunction of the pineal gland has been linked to sleep disorders such as sleep deprivation. Studies have shown that people with sleep disorders have altered melatonin levels and irregular sleep patterns. Furthermore, exposure from electric lighting at night has been found to suppress melatonin production and disrupt the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, resulting in sleep disorders.
